Carroll Cross Country sweeps Boys’ and Girls’ GCL Titles
The Carroll Cross Country teams competed in the GCL Championships at Fenwick High School. The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams both won to complete the sweep for the Patriots for the 2nd year in a row. The Varsity Boys’ won the GCL Championship with a low score of 33 points to finish ahead of McNicholas (63), CJ (72), CJ (113), Badin (76), Fenwick (98), Alter (159), Roger Bacon (218), and Purcell Marian. This was the 9th GCL title in a row for the Patriots and 13th in the last 14 years. It was the 28th League Title in team history for the boys.
The Patriot boys had an outstanding team race with all 7 runners contributing to the team’s overall win. Carroll was led by junior Kevin Agnew who was the individual GCL champion with a time of 15:51 which broke the old meet/course record. The previous record was held by Alum Michael Laughlin in a time of 15:58 from the 2016 GCL meet. Agnew was named the GCL runner of the year and also earned 1st Team All-GCL honors. In addition to Agnew, the following Carroll runners were 1st Team All-GCL: Grant Arnold (2nd - 16:19), Michael Osgood (6th – 16:42), and Andrew Connair (7th – 16:52). Drew Maxwell (17th – 17:20) was 3rd Team All-GCL. Seth Tivakaran (27th – 17:56) and Luke Wittman (28th – 17:56) rounded out the top 7 for the Patriots.
The Carroll Varsity Girls’ earned the title of CGL Champions with 46 points to finish ahead of 2nd place Badin (59). The Patriots also finished ahead of Fenwick (59), Alter (94), CJ (106), McNicholas (137), Roger Bacon (217), and Purcell Marian. This was the 2nd GCL title in a row for the lady Patriots and they have finished 1st or 2nd in the GCL 11 out of the last 14 years. It was the 16th League Title in team history for the girls. Carroll had an outstanding effort from all 7 runners in the varsity race. The lady Patriots had two runners earn 1st Team All-GCL honors: Meghan Schrand (4th – 20:29) and Sarah Ochs (6th – 20:42). Grace Braun (10th – 21:00) and Sydney Thomas (11th – 21:13) were 2nd Team All-GCL. Cecilia Leopold (15th – 21:22), Meredith Sanders (18th – 21:42), and Trinity Raber (20th – 22:03) were 3rd Team All-GCL.
The Carroll Reserve Boys’ finished in 1st (15 points – perfect score) ahead of 2nd place Badin (57), and also ahead of Fenwick (100), McNicholas (106), Alter (116), CJ (149), Roger Bacon, and Purcell Marian. Freshman Nathan Schiffler took home the individual title in 17:59 and helped lead Carroll which took the first 7 spots in the JV race. The following Patriot boys rounded out the top 7 for the reserve team: Michael Duckro (2nd – 18:10), Javier Barajas (3rd – 18:17), Jack Agnew (4th – 18:22), Patrick Morrow (5th – 18:23), Hayden Everding (6th – 18:28), and Christian Anguiano (7th – 18:40). The following Patriot boys also competed in the reserve GCL Championships: Adam Cross (11th – 18:56), Miles Smith-Custer (12th – 18:57), Patrick Sableski (15th – 19:10), Luke Galiardo (24th – 19:45), Todd Jokerst (25th – 19:54), Chris Rutschle (27th – 20:05), Trace Bauersfeld (29th – 20:08), Roman Gellhar (30th – 20:09), Kamron Porter (32nd – 20:10), Sam Reichman (35th – 20:16), James DeWall (40th – 20:26), Cameron Neidhard (51st – 20:59), Chris Short (53rd – 21:02), Wyatt Manos (56th – 21:14), Alexis Ortiz (63rd – 22:39), Nathan Snizik (79th – 25:49).
The Carroll Reserve Girls’ finished in 2nd place with 29 points and only 3 points from first place Badin (29 points). The lady patriots finished ahead of Alter (87), CJ (104), Roger Bacon (130), McNicolas, Fenwick, and Purcell Marian. Junior Sophie Mock took home the individual title in 22:28 and junior Madi Werner was runner-up in 22:35. The following girls rounded out the top 7 for the reserve team: Skylynn Pierce (7th – 22:37), Abby Noss (9th – 23:36), Erin Murray (10th – 23:57), Shay Harris (11th – 23:58), Avianna Seymour (13th – 24:35), Myrna Leopold (15th – 24:50), Caroleigh Moylan (21st – 25:54), Miranda Shock (28th – 27:36), Emma Howey (33rd – 29:00), and Karli Beard (34th – 29:04). John Agnew was named GCL Coach of the Year for both the boys and girls.
